McCarty calls it a career after 15 years

Darren McCartyThe long and winding road has come to an end for long-time Red Wing Darren McCarty, who announced his retirement on Monday afternoon. McCarty, a 37-year old right-handed winger who was born in Burnaby, British Columbia, was part of four Stanley Cup Red Wing teams during his 15 year career. He spent his time mostly in Detroit, but he had other stops in Calgary as well as the Flint Generals in the IHL and Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL.

Brendan Shanahan retires at 40

Brendan ShanahanAfter 21 seasons in the National Hockey League, Brendan Shanahan has finally announced his retirement. In a planned move on Tuesday, the 40-year-old winger called it quits on what can only be described as a gloriously successful career. With the 2009 NHL Hall of Fame induction ceremonies out of the headlines, Shanahan’s retirement announcement comes at a perfect time. All focus will be on the eight-time All-Star, and there will certainly be some ceremonies in his honor in Detroit in the coming days, the city where Shanahan brought back three Stanley Cups and where he undoubtedly enjoyed the majority of his success.

Osgood reaches milestone 50th shutout

Chris OsgoodChris Osgood put another 29 saves onto his resume as his surging Detroit Red Wings knocked off the slumping Boston Bruins 2-0. These denials came as a part of his 394th career victory. Added to these stats is the fact that those saves added up to his 50th career shutout, a milestone that only 22 others in the NHL have achieved. Osgood’s play of late has been somewhat below what is expected of him, as the Red Wings find themselves in a four-way tie for 8th place in the Western Conference, but he was in top form during Tuesday night’s victory.

Devils Advance To East Semifinals

Gionta and the Devils advance
On Sunday, the New Jersey Devils advanced to the NHL Eastern Conference semifinals, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2. New Jersey Devil Brian Gionta scored two goals, and teammate Brian Rafalski scored one goal. The Devils wound up winning the series four games to two.
